# Do we support variant or product SKU/Barcode Metafield as a Product Identifier?

Yes, syncX: Stock Sync supports the use of variant or product SKU/Barcode metafields as a product identifier. This feature allows you to use a custom metafield value for identifying product variants, which can be particularly useful when your store has complex variant structures or when the default SKU field doesn't meet your needs.

### What is a Variant SKU Metafield?
A variant SKU metafield is a custom field in Shopify that allows you to define an additional identifier for your product variants. Unlike the standard SKU field, a metafield can be customized to store any type of information, providing greater flexibility in managing your inventory and product data.

### How to Configure in syncX: Stock Sync

1. Open syncX: Stock Sync.
2. Go to **Edit Settings > Matching Column (Step2)** > Find **Product Identifier Field**.
3. Select **Variant Metafield** that created as the identifier in your **Shopify admin**.
4. Enter the **namespace**: **syncx** and **key**: **variantsku** for the Variant SKU Metafield (e.g., **metafield.variant.syncx.variantsku**).

|| You can also specify your identifier matching using SKU++metafield.product.<namespace and key>, as shown in the example below.

Note: You may enter any valid namespace and key combination such as metafield.variant.yamaha.material_number when using a metafield as the identifier. For product-level metafields, use the format metafield.product.<namespace>.<key>. For variant-level metafields, use metafield.variant.<namespace>.<key>.


### If you want to learn how to add a metafield to variants, here are the steps:

Step 1: Create a Variant SKU Metafield in Shopify

1. Go to your Shopify Admin.
2. Navigate to **Settings > Custom Data > Variants**.
3. Click on **Add definition**.
4. Name your metafield (e.g., **Variant SKU/Barcode Metafield**).
5. Set the namespace and key (e.g., **metafield.variant.syncx.variantsku**).
6. Choose the content type (usually a single-line text).
7. Click **Save** to create the metafield.

Step 2: Add Values to the Variant SKU Metafield

1. Navigate to the product you want to edit.
2. Scroll down to the **Variants** section.
3. For each variant, click **Edit**.
4. In the Metafields section, find the newly created **Variant SKU/Barcode Metafield**.
5. Enter the desired SKU or identifier or use syncX: Stock Sync to update the [Variant Metafield](https://help.stock-sync.com/en/article/metafields-ptbnev/).
