Steps to Avoid Issues During Product Uploads
When uploading products using Stock Sync, several common issues can prevent items from being created or updated correctly. Follow these steps to avoid interruptions, failed uploads, and unexpected results.
Ensure Required Variant Fields Have Values
Missing variant option values (such as Size, Color, or custom option fields) will cause errors like:
- Missing combination of Product Option and Variant Option
- You need to add option values for Size
- Title can't be blank
To prevent this:
- Make sure every variant option you map has a value in your file
- If a product does not use a particular option, assign a default placeholder (e.g., "N/A" or "Default")
- Ensure your mapping refers to the correct column
Check Product Option Naming Conventions
Shopify does not accept option names containing " / " (space-slash-space).
Examples:
- "Color / Finish" → invalid
- "Color/Finish" → valid
If you use fixed option names in Stock Sync, remove spaces around the slash.
Verify SKU and Identifier Consistency
Stock Sync requires a valid and unique identifier for every item.
- Ensure SKU or product identifier columns are not empty
- Avoid duplicate SKUs when using an Add Product feed
Distinguish Between Add and Update Feeds
To keep your catalog clean:
- Use Add Feed to create new products only
- Use Update Feed to update existing products
Running both in sequence prevents partially uploaded products or skipped updates.
Avoid Aborting Uploads Mid-Process
Stopping a feed during processing may cause:
- Partial uploads (missing images or details)
- Products added without content
- Credits being consumed even after cancellation
Let the feed finish or contact support to reverse the process instead of manually deleting products.
Use Filters to Control What Gets Uploaded
Incoming Feed Filters help prevent incorrect or incomplete products from being uploaded.
- Filter out items missing key fields
- Restrict updates to specific brands, suppliers, or categories
Check Image Limits and Large File Behavior
Shopify supports up to 40 images per product. Ensure:
- Your feed does not exceed this limit
- Image URLs are accessible
Large or complex feeds may take longer to process, especially when metafields are included.
Confirm That Data in the Source File Matches Mapping
If the upload fails despite correct mapping:
- Ensure the data exists in the exact column mapped (e.g., Size, Color, Title)
- Double-check for updated or renamed headers
Following these steps reduces the chance of upload errors and ensures smooth processing of your product data.
